James Rogers

James Rogers is a contemporary British artist whose sculptural practice combines digital fabrication, installation and traditional casting techniques to interrogate the relationship between materiality, technology and perception. Born in 1987, he studied at Wimbledon College of Art before completing a postgraduate degree at the Royal Academy Schools, where his interest in hybrid sculptural forms took root.

Rogers’s work often occupies the threshold between the fabricated and the organic. He uses 3D modelling, CNC milling and digital scanning alongside hand-built processes, allowing him to manipulate surface, scale and structure in ways that challenge conventional expectations of sculpture. His forms—sometimes reminiscent of architectural fragments, synthetic organisms or geological strata—situate the viewer within a dialogue between the natural world and engineered environments.

Underlying much of Rogers’s work is a concern with how digital technologies reshape our sensory and conceptual engagement with objects. His sculptures often appear simultaneously futuristic and archaeological, as though excavated from a near future shaped by technological shifts. He frequently employs casting — in plaster, resin or metal — to create ambiguities between original and copy, questioning the ontological status of objects in an era of infinite digital reproduction.

Rogers has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions across the UK, including presentations at the Royal Academy, Frestonian Gallery, and contemporary sculpture platforms. His work has been recognised through awards and residencies, and he is part of a generation of artists rethinking the sculptural object through the interplay of digital and tactile processes.

Rogers’s practice reveals a sophisticated negotiation between innovation and material tradition. By allowing the digital and the physical to collide, his sculptures evoke both the excitement and unease of our technologically mediated landscape.
