Most of The Netherlands lies below sea level, which means we grow up with a sense that the land has been only temporarily reclaimed. In a similar way, our emotions, our feelings, are just there below our skin and we can become flooded by them at any time. It is rare for me to paint landscapes. This image is of the rear balcony of my sister's house with steps leading into the garden. When she became terminally ill, I imagined her garden flooded, in total isolation from the neighborhood.
