Mary Martin
Works
Overview
Mary Martin (1907–1969) was a major British Constructivist artist whose reliefs and sculptural forms exemplified clarity, precision, and serial order. Working alongside her husband Kenneth Martin, she developed an influential body of work grounded in geometric abstraction and architectural logic. Her reliefs—often composed of modular wooden or metal elements—explore rhythm, proportion, and spatial transformation.
Martin represented Britain at the Venice Biennale (1966) and was included in landmark exhibitions of European Constructivism. Her work is held in Tate and major institutional collections. A pioneer in merging art and architectural thought, Martin remains a central figure in postwar abstraction.
