Biography

Bronwen Sleigh (b. 1980) is a highly regarded contemporary visual artist based in Scotland whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Renowned for her deeply considered investigations of built environments and urban landscapes, Sleigh’s work challenges the viewer to re-examine the ordinary by transforming familiar architectural forms into evocative explorations of space, structure, and abstraction.

Born in 1980 and raised in Mid-Wales, Sleigh’s early experiences shaped a lifelong curiosity about the relationship between people, places and the environments they inhabit. She pursued her artistic education at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating with a BA in Design Illustration in 2002. She then continued her studies at the Royal College of Art in London, where she completed an MA in Fine Art Printmaking in 2008. During her time at the RCA, she was honoured with a six-week academic exchange at the University of Calgary in Canada, an experience that broadened her engagement with international artistic communities.

Sleigh’s artistic practice is rooted in a fascination with man-made structures — from industrial architecture and urban edges to forgotten spaces at the margins of cities. Rather than simply depicting these environments, her work actively engages in a dialogue with them. By moving fluidly between two- and three-dimensional forms — drawing to sculpture and print to installation — she investigates how space is perceived, navigated and interpreted, often turning familiar built forms into something unfamiliar and intriguing.

Her printmaking in particular is celebrated for its technical sophistication and conceptual depth. Sleigh’s etchings and lithographs often begin with careful observation and structural analysis, which she then abstracts through layered processes that emphasise pattern, repetition and spatial nuance. The labour-intensive nature of these techniques — from etching plates to hand-coloured finishes — is central to her approach, making the act of creation itself integral to meaning.

In addition to her studio practice, Sleigh has held roles with some of the UK’s most prestigious art institutions. She has worked as a Print Fellow at the Royal Academy Schools, taught and collaborated at the Royal College of Art, and contributed as an etching technician and collaborating printer at Edinburgh Printmakers. These experiences have placed her at the crossroads of contemporary artistic production, education and technical craft.

Her work has been widely exhibited across the United Kingdom and internationally, including in galleries and collections in North America, Europe and Asia. Examples of her work are held in major public collections, such as the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Parliamentary Art Collection, and university collections in the UK and abroad.

Sleigh’s commitment to artistic growth has also taken her to numerous artist residencies, including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada and Cove Park in Scotland — experiences that have further informed her practice and widened her creative dialogues.

In recognition of her contribution to Scottish art, she was elected as an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) in 2023, a mark of esteem within the Scottish artistic community.
