I've painted and drawn a lot of divers; this is a misfit to the extent that it belongs to that series but lacks a protagonist. I am also drawn to swimming pools as a cipher for the canvas itself: a rectangle in which you can immerse yourself or pass into a world which is slightly apart from everything else. As a pool edge, this image sits on the periphery of those spaces, a characteristic which is reflected in the conspicuous visibility of the unpainted linen at the bottom of the image: this is an edge both in its subject and means of representation.
